Setting the timing on a Massey Ferguson 35 tractor can be achieved by following these steps:
1. Remove the distributor cap to check the rotor’s position.
2. Locate the timing mark. On a Massey Ferguson 35 the timing mark should be located on the crankshaft pulley.
3. Check and adjust the valves. Ensure that the valves are adjusted properly.
4. Install a timing light. Make sure the lead from the timing light is plugged into the distributor.
5. Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
6. Set the engine to run at idle and set the timing advance to the manufacturer’s specifications, usually two or two and a half degrees. This can be done by loosening the distributor clamp and rotating the distributor to adjust the timing.
7. Connect the timing light and point it towards the timing mark.
8. Check the timing with the timing light and adjust as needed.
9. Tighten the distributor clamp and replace the distributor cap.
10. Take the engine out of idle, rev it up and check the timing advance again. If the timing is still not correct, make necessary adjustments.
11. Once everything is adjusted correctly, shut off the engine and check the timing one more time.
