The first step in repairing power steering on a 64 Massey Ferguson tractor is to check the power steering pump and the hoses leading to the power steering cylinder. Check for any leaks, cracks, or other damage in the hoses and/or the pump. If any of these issues exist, they must be repaired immediately.
Once the hoses and pump are checked, the next step is to remove the steering wheel, if necessary. The steering wheel will need to be unbolted in order to access the power steering cylinder. Once the steering wheel is removed, take note of the various mounting points and the steering box.
Once the steering box and steering wheel are removed, the steering cylinder will be exposed. Check the power steering cylinder for any signs of wear or damage. If any worn parts or damage is found, it needs to be replaced.
Once the power steering cylinder is replaced, the steering linkages can be reconnected. Be sure to use new locknuts and bolts to secure the parts in place.
Once the power steering is re-attached and working properly, the steering wheel should easily spin in either direction. It is important to check the power steering periodically for any signs of wear or damage. This will ensure the best performance from the tractor.
